The research participant is the individual who consents to participate in the study.
The population is the pool from which the research participants are drawn. A population is considered a named population when the investigators intend to refer to it specifically in publications, presentations, and other venues.
In the context of genetic research, the community is also an important term which refers to a broader ethnic, racial, geographic, or other group that may be affected by the research results.
